Communities in the United Kingdom are in a race to see who can be the greenest after the government started putting pressure on local councils to get something done to reduce waste and increase recycling rates. The government was prompted by reports which revealed that the United Kingdom was lagging far behind most of Europe when it came to green lifestyles. Even though recycling rates have improved in the United Kingdom the country is still well behind most of Europe and continues to send a large percentage of rubbish to landfills. Reduction of the size of landfills was one of the key issues in the directives laid out by the European Union for all of its member nations. Recent studies show that some towns in the United Kingdom are doing their part to help the country become greener.
A recent survey conducted by Experian revealed that the residents of Wandsworth rank as the greenest in all of the United Kingdom. The study found that over sixty percent of those people living in Wandsworth are what are known as eco-evangelists, or those who care a great deal about environmental issues. Of all of the mainstream local authorities Wandsworth ranked the highest in this regard, with only the city of London having a higher percentage. Some have suggested the London numbers are dubious as it was recently ranked as Europe’s dirtiest city.
Experian also looked at different demographics and how certain factors affect the way that people behave. The study found that the most environmentally friendly people are generally well educated.
