Universal Recycling Label gets 50 new Signatories

Green issues have been on the forefront of media and conversation over the last few months as the world prepares for the United Nations summit on climate change that will take place in Copenhagen.  As a lead up environmental groups and businesses have been launching schemes and campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the issues of climate change, waste, and recycling.  Some businesses in the United Kingdom have come together to launch schemes that promote products that are friendlier to the environment.  Fifty of these companies recently joined a campaign to use a universal on pack recycling label so that customers are aware of what products use recycled materials.

Many companies have been looking for ways to increase their green profile and a universal label that is widely recognized is an easy way for them to let customers know that they are doing their part.  Studies have shown people are most likely to participate in those activities that either offer incentives or take very little effort.  Although some have said that these types of labels are just a form of greenwashing where companies try to appear as if they are green when they really aren’t, others think that these types of labels allow customers to make more educated decisions about the products that they choose to purchase.

The label hopes to simplify the purchasing product by giving an easy to recognize universal symbol that will replace the wide variety that may have some customers confused.  A secondary goal will be to drive non-recycled packaging out of the market by letting customers know exactly which companies are not doing their part.
