With issues of the economy and environment dominating the news as of late it is no wonder that businesses are looking for ways to cut costs and get greener. Sometimes these two can go hand and hand as many companies have found that by doing a simple environmental audit they can find ways to save their company money and get greener at the same time. Airlines have been especially hard hit by the global recession and are desperate for ways to cut costs as well as repair their image when it comes to environmental issues. After studies were recently released which say that air travel is responsible for a large amount of carbon emissions, airlines have been scrambling to find ways to improve their green image.
While some have turned to biofuels to taxi around the runway, some are taking a simpler approach and doing the things that many people have been doing in their own homes for years. One of these airlines is Monarch, which launched an on board recycling program all the way back in 2007. Even though Monarch has been ahead of the field when it comes to recycling they recently announced an extension of the program which will include all flights from Manchester. This means that all of the potentially recyclable products such as glass, plastic, and paper will be immediately recycled upon landing.
Monarch launched its MAP (Monarch and the Planet) initiative to look for innovative ways to reduce its carbon footprint. Currently all aspects of the airline are being evaluated to find out the best ways to become greener.
