Scrap Steel Supply Dwindles due to Economy

The two biggest issues in the world over the last two years have been the environment and the economy.  In fact, a recent study showed that some of the biggest hits on the internet over the last decade are sites discussing one of these two issues.  Although many in the world see these issues as separate entities many are starting to realize that many of the struggles in the economy have come as a result of ignoring environmental issues.  It is also becoming increasingly evident that the businesses involving the environment could be one way out of the current financial mess that has seen the United Kingdom mired in five consecutive quarters of loss.

One of the environmental industries hit hardest by the economy is the scrap steel industry, which has watched its global supply plummet as a result of the economic downturn.  The global economy has taken a huge toll on levels of scrap metal, partially because people are postponing decisions on purchasing things like home renovation and new cars, two of the biggest sources for scrap steel.  Spokesmen for Sims Metal Management claim that global scrap steel levels will be at their lowest in some time and that by 2010 the world supply could be at dangerously low levels.

Sims Metal Management said that supplies from western countries like the United States and the United Kingdom have fallen partially because there is not enough economic incentive for people to recycle scrap metal.  However, much of the loss has been offset by increases in scrap metal coming from China.
