Obama Announces Plans for Copenhagen

The world has waited with much anticipation for December’s United Nations summit on climate change which will take place in Copenhagen.  Predictions about the results of the summit have varied with some groups saying that the world should be able to come to a binding resolution about carbon emissions, while others skeptical that anything will happen.  One of the biggest issues of the summit has been the level of involvement that the United States will have.  Even though President Obama campaigned heavily on environmental issues, many were skeptical as to whether the U.S. would be as active at the summit as they need to be for positive change to take place.  Not only is the U.S. one of the biggest emitters of carbon, their involvement also affects the level of commitments that will be made by developing nations like India and China.

This is why many are optimistic about President Obama’s recent announcement that he will be attending the summit in Copenhagen.  Although President Obama will not be there for the entirety of the talks, his participation is a sign to some that the United States is finally going to get serious about taking action on climate change.  Heads of State from all over the world will be in attendance to hopefully lay out a plan for how to best tackle the issue of global warming.

Environmental campaigners say that President Obama’s involvement in the summit is crucial if the world is going to be able to come to some sort of resolution about climate change.
