EnviroFone Launches Mobile Phone Recycling Scheme

Mobile phone manufacturers have felt pressure from governments to come up with new and innovative ways to increase the number of people who recycle their used mobile phones.  As technology speeds along at ever faster rates people are replacing phones more often in an effort to always have the latest and greatest technology.  This has left behind hundreds of millions of phones that could potentially end up being disposed of in improper ways.  Mobile phone batteries can leak over time and leave harmful chemicals to find their way into soil and eventually into water supplies.  A recent scheme by EnviroFone aims to keep mobile phones from ending up contaminating landfills.

EnviroFone is a division of EnviroServe and has been named as the official recycler for the National Mobile Phone Recycling Campaign which was launched by the UAE.  They recently announced that they would be adding an additional five hundred green boxes around different Emirates by the end of November 2009.  These boxes give convenient locations for citizens to recycle their old mobile phones and studies have shown that convenience is the number one factor involved in the choice of whether or not to recycle an old phone.  The boxes can also be used to recycle other electronics that are roughly the same size as a mobile phone, such as television remote controls, MP3 players, and small handheld devices.

The boxes will be located all over the seven Emirates at places like shopping malls, petrol stations, banks, supermarket chains, and business communities.
