Conservatives Launch Vouchers for Recycling Program

After it was recently revealed that the United Kingdom was lagging behind many other European countries in its efforts towards recycling and waste management, government has put pressure on communities and local councils to come up with innovative schemes to encourage people to reduce waste and increase recycling.  Some communities have come up with additional bins to make it more convenient for residents to separate rubbish, while others have increased collection of recyclables to get residents to recycle more often.  Recently the Conservative party of the United Kingdom got involved when it revealed its plans to offer vouchers to those families who recycle the most.

Families could get over one hundred pounds per year under the new plan, which rewards families for the recycling of household waste.  The plan was developed as a way to offset the dustbin taxes proposed by the Labour Party.  The plan would allow families to receive vouchers from high street stores like Tesco and Marks & Spencer.  The plan has already had a successful pilot in Berkshire and will be implemented all over the United Kingdom after being announced Shadow Chancellor George Osborne.  In the areas were the plan was tested recycling rates rose dramatically.  In Maidenhead and Windsor recycling rates went up by nearly thirty percent after the voucher system was implemented.

The Conservatives hope to appeal to the rising number of citizens who are concerned with green issues and they also hope to establish the Conservative Party as the greener party.  They believe that rewards, not punishment are the most effective way to increase recycling rates.
