Industries all over the world are looking for ways to become greener by reducing waste and increasing recycling rates. Since it was announced that the United Kingdom was well behind many of the goals outlined by the European Union, the government has put pressure on local councils and businesses to find new and innovative ways to increase recycling rates. One industry that has come up with a new scheme is the carpet industry, which has long been guilty of throwing scraps of carpet left over from installations into landfills. This is why the carpet sector is launching a new National Action Plan to help increase the current carpet recycling rates in the United Kingdom.
Currently only about two percent of carpet scraps are being recycled, a number that the industry knows must go way up if it is to survive. Businesses are being hit with increasingly high landfill fees which have driven up the cost of doing business in ways that are not friendly to the environment. Carpet Recycling UK is a trade organization which represents the retailers, manufacturers and recyclers of carpet around the United Kingdom. Carpet Recycling UK came up with the scheme because it says there are currently no incentives for companies to recycle carpet.
The plan, which has been supported by WRAP, includes a collection system which can handle the wide array of disposal routes that waste carpet can become a part of and a system which can identify the composition of most carpet waste. The plan also calls for a centralized location for floor recycling services, which would make it much more convenient for people to recycle.
