Over the years certain foods have taken on a political aspect. As people learn the gory details of how certain foods are created, they realize that the unique taste may not be worth the cruelty it takes to make it. Foods like veal have long been scorned by animal activists who say that it is animal cruelty which exists only to cater to the wealthy and is really unnecessary. The first minister was forced evaluate the menu at his residence after complaints from animal rights groups which claim one of the menu items is created through animal cruelty.
First Minister Alex Salmon was forced to take foie gras off of the menu at the official residence after animal rights groups pressured the minister over animal cruelty. Foie gras has long been a target of animal rights groups as it is created through the cruel practice of force feeding geese and ducks to enlarge their livers. The expensive delicacy was often served at official dinners for VIPs visiting the residence. Foie gras has been taken off of menus at many High Street stores and the production of foie gras goes against many Scottish laws designed to protect animal welfare.
The charity Advocates for Animals led the attack against foie gras, which will now be removed from all government functions and dinners. Foie gras is created in countries like Canada, China, and the United States, by force large amounts of maize being force fed to geese and ducks so that their liver enlarges to ten times its normal size.
