InJet Offers Carbon Offsetting for Private Jets

One of the most controversial issues relating to climate change is the practice of carbon offsetting.  While some think is a great way for individuals and businesses to balance out the carbon that they emit into the environment, others feel it simply puts a band-aid on the issue and allows people to continue to abuse the environment without guilt.  Environmental groups say that while carbon offsetting may be a short term solution, it is ultimately just a way for the wealthy to continue to live destructive lifestyles and to feel good about it, without making any real changes in their lives.  A new program launched by InJet will allow corporations and individuals to offset the carbon footprint created by using a private jet.

The program, which is supported by TerraPass, will permit customers to choose from many different ways of offsetting their carbon emissions.  The different models of offsetting will be chosen based on the size of the aircraft and the amount of carbon it produces.  The program will allow companies to pay fees which will go to offset the amount of carbon that they use.  This means that companies using a 25 hour light jet service would be able to pay just under eight hundred dollars to offset the fifty metric tons of carbon emissions that go along with such a service.

The money is then taken by TerraPass and re-invested in wind farms, which theoretically undoes some of the damage done by using a private jet.  Although carbon offsetting is one option, many groups feel that this type of behavior should be limited or stopped, as it does not encourage new innovation.
