British Workers not being Green at Work

As businesses and individuals try to do their part to increase recycling and reduce waste, many are evaluating new and innovative schemes that can be employed.  Most people who are asked say that they are very conscientious recyclers when they are in their own home.  The numbers support this claim as studies have shown that recycling numbers have went up all over the United Kingdom.  Not only are people recycling more but they are reducing waste by properly disposing of things like food waste, electronics, and newspapers.  However, according to a recent study, these practices are not being carried over to the workplace, where many Brits admit they do not do their part to recycle.

The study was the joint effort of Tickbox.net and Opinion Matters, which aimed to compare recycling rates of British homes compared to that of the workplace.  What the study found is that many green minded individuals lose this motivation when they are at work.  The study showed that while forty percent of those surveyed recycle plastics in their homes, they do not do it at their workplace.  Of those surveyed, women were found to be the guiltiest of not recycling and creating unnecessary waste in the workplace in the form of wasted paper and electricity.

Over twenty percent of those surveyed said that they often print out emails and other documents unnecessarily and the same number said that they sometimes put non-recyclables in the recycling bin.  Experts say that the main reason for this wasteful behavior is that workers are not paying for the waste, and they see it as a way to rebel against their company.
