European Week of Waste Reduction set to begin in UK

The European Union has taken a strong stance against climate change.  It has set specific guidelines for each of its member nations to step up their efforts to increase recycling and reduce waste.  The United Kingdom has come under fire recently for its failure to meet many of these objectives so government and local councils have been looking for new and unique ways to increase awareness about this very important issue.  Next week the United Kingdom will join twenty other European Nations in the first annual European Week of Waste Reduction, which will involve thousands of projects whose common goal is to reduce the amount of waste across the European continent.

The European Week of Waste Reduction is specifically targeting local businesses, councils, and public organizations and will involve campaigns designed to increase awareness, and in some cases, set targets for reduction.  Both regional and national efforts will be part of the more than two thousand campaigns which will take place over the course of the week.  The United Kingdom will feature one hundred and forty one campaigns with most of them taking place in East Anglia where a government organization is taking the lead on the week long initiative.

The week hopes to place increased emphasis on the importance of environmental issues surrounding waste management, and to stress the importance of waste prevention programs.  European Union directives require EU member countries to design and produce waste prevention campaigns by December 12, 2013.  The UK will feature a variety of programs such as the recycling bus, which aims to raise awareness about recycling as well as sustainable shopping.
