Environmental concerns have increasingly become more important to people around the United Kingdom. With recent studies showing that the United Kingdom is well behind most of Europe when it comes to recycling and waste management, new pressure has been put on government and local councils to get something done. E-waste, or waste created by throwing away things like mobile phones and televisions, has become a major concern in the United Kingdom after it was revealed that many companies were dumping the waste on developing nations in Africa. Since these reports have surfaced, the topic of e-waste has become a popular one, with many wondering exactly what to do with all of those used electronic devices.
One of the biggest contributors to e-waste is rapidly growing technology that quickly makes devices obsolete. Things like mobile phones, MP3 players, and televisions are constantly being supplanted by the newest model, and with most of the UK obsessed with new gadgets, it doesn’t take long for the old ones to hit the trash. One of the biggest contributors is televisions, which are becoming cheaper and more advanced by the second. A recent study showed that there has been a seventy percent increase in the number of televisions thrown out over the last few years.
Most of these televisions are still in working order and are simply obsolete by the standards of a United Kingdom consumer. Studies found that most people in the UK have at least one television in their house that is not being used. Recycling insiders are calling for people who have unused TV’s to donate them to local charity shops or to bring them in for recycling, rather than putting them in the trash.
