Lumber as Fuel has Serious Drawbacks

People all over the world are looking for new and unique ways to create energy.  Biofuel is being created from nearly everything from lumber to soiled baby diapers.  However, some environmental groups are saying that there may be drawbacks to some of these new techniques which might not yet be evident.  One such practice is the burning of lumber for fuel, a practice which is causing some major concern among environmental groups.  Britain aims to cut down even more trees in the future as more and more biomass fueled power plants are being built every day.

Britain is preparing to pillage forests around the world to feed its growing need for lumber to burn in power plants.  Although they claim only sustainable places are being used, some environmental groups aren’t so sure.  Because most of the wood will be imported from other countries, environmental groups are concerned about the amount of carbon emissions that will be created by the transport of such large amounts of wood.   In addition, because the wood needs to be baked according to United Kingdom pest control laws, even more potential emissions of carbon will be created.

Others are concerned that he practice will drive up the cost of lumber and make products produced from wood much more expensive.  Officials in the wood industry predict that the cost for things like furniture and wood paneling will soar in cost because of the growing demand of lumber for fuel.  The industry is being encouraged to use more waste wood for fuel instead of cutting down virgin forests.
