Local councils in the United Kingdom have stepped up their efforts to increase recycling and reduce waste. At the urging of the government, local councils are looking for new and innovative ways to keep rubbish from reaching landfills. It has almost become a competition, with each council, county, or community hoping to be the greenest. This is exactly the type of action it will take for the United Kingdom to reach the recycling and waste management standards outlined by the European Union for each of its member countries. The United Kingdom hopes to reduce the size of its landfills by half over the next five years, an optimistic goal that is being helped by places like Suffolk.
A recent study showed that households in Suffolk are among the best recyclers in their county, and in the United Kingdom at large. The region has been a leader in the green revolution and a Defra study showed that they are ahead of most of the national averages when it comes to recycling and waste management. The recycling rates in Suffolk are nearly seven percent higher than the national average according to the study, which aimed to show the greenest councils and communities in the United Kingdom.
Suffolk shared the honors with East Midlands as tops in the region for recycling over the last year. The Mid Suffolk District also proved to have a large number of environmental minded residents as it collects over three hundred kilograms of waste per head, which is on the top ten list of waste collection by individuals.
