As the United Kingdom looks for new ways to dispose of rubbish many controversies have arisen regarding the best and safest way to dispose of waste. As new technology is developed people have to re-think their approach to recycling and waste management. Landfills are one of the most critical environmental issues in the United Kingdom, as they have become increasingly polluted and increasingly expensive to manage. This has led to local councils and government agencies looking for new ways to keep rubbish from reaching a landfill. Although some environmental activists are against it, a new way may have been found to keep rubbish from landfills as well as create energy for the United Kingdom.
United Kingdom trash collectors have a plan to burn rubbish as opposed to putting it into landfills. This helps them avoid expensive landfill fees and may be an inexpensive way to create power. The United Kingdom may be able to burn around fifteen tonnes of waste each year, which would create between two thousand and four thousand megawatts of heat and power. The Pennon Group along with Montagu Private Equity plan to build a series of energy from waste generators, which they claim will be able to heat and light more than four million homes. Although many think this is a unique way to create energy and reduce landfills, some are saying it is just a quick fix that doesn’t address the core issue.
Environmental group Friends of the Earth claims that this scheme is just a band-aid and doesn’t address the real problem, which his reducing waste. They say rubbish should be recycled and not burned in incinerators, which only add to pollution.
