Environment Agency to Cut IT Emissions

With the upcoming United Nations summit on climate change rapidly approaching, the government of the United Kingdom is putting pressure on businesses, local councils, and individuals to do their part to reduce waste and increase recycling.  New and innovative schemes and strategies are being used in an effort to get the UK near the standards it has set for itself, as well as those imposed by the European Union.   Although it is uncertain whether a resolution will be reached at the summit, many are preparing for the reality that things are going to rapidly change over the next few years.  The government of the United Kingdom has not left itself out of the discussion, and has asked its agencies to look for any possible ways to reduce waste.

The Wales and England Environment Agency recently made an announcement that it would cut its IT carbon emissions in half though the efforts of a new outsourcing deal.  The agency will transfer around one hundred members of its staff Capgemini, which will add another two hundred employees who will manage IT systems for the approximate thirteen thousand people employed by the Environment Agency.  The outsourcing will allow Capgemini to watch over emissions and pollution management.  The deal will be worth over three hundred million pounds over the next seven years.

The contract will put systems in place to dispose of IT equipment, which can also be used by other UK government departments in the future.  The Environment Agency hopes to halve its carbon emissions over the seven year period.
