As the world becomes more aware of environmental issues, fundamental elements of every country will have to change. Not only will the infrastructure need to be altered to accommodate new types of cars, trains, buses, and motorbikes, but people will have to change as well. Some, especially those who work in fossil fuel, automobile, chemical, and production industries may be looking for new jobs as theirs become increasingly irrelevant. Although some may bemoan or even fear this change, others will embrace the potential millions of new jobs that will be created by green technology. One prominent politician thinks that now is the time to focus on creating these jobs as a means of getting a head start on the inevitable change.
Recently the chairman of the Environment Agency, Lord Smith, said that more scientists and engineers needed to be trained in the United Kingdom so that the country can deal with the many changes that will need to occur to lower carbon emissions. Smith says that the Copenhagen summit on climate change will not solve all of the problems and that individuals and countries will have to prepare for the changes that must come if the human race is going to continue to thrive. Smith outlined a plan which he called the Climate Change Fund that would set aside money for low carbon research and job training.
Smith contends that this fund will be very important for achieving low carbon energy production, greener transport, and links to a high speed rail system that will connect the United Kingdom and Europe.
