Wind Power gets Boost in UK

In the fight against climate change one of the biggest weapons will be alternative sources of energy.  The world is quickly realizing that it cannot continue to burn fossil fuels as its primary source of electricity and heat.  Not only are these types of fuels the primary contributors to climate change but they are rapidly depleting.  In addition to the difficulties in extracting fossil fuels, the world’s richest supply lies in one of the least stable places on Earth, the Middle East.  Because of this countries are stepping up their efforts to develop technology which does not rely on costly fossil fuels.  Wind is one source of energy which many are realizing could be the most viable option.

The European Investment Bank is currently considering a three hundred million pound investment which will speed up the connection of offshore wind farms in the United Kingdom to the national energy grid.  The news comes on the heels of an announcement by energy regulator Ofgem that revealed the thirteen companies that will be allowed to bid on contracts to build high voltage transmission links with wind farms in the United Kingdom.  The combined value of these contracts is over a billion pounds.

The three hundred million pound investment by the European Investment Bank will be available for six projects that will connect 1.6 gigawatts of offshore electricity to the power grid.  Most environmentalists believe that solar and wind power will be the future of energy, as they create the least amount of carbon emissions.  Energy companies in the UK are positioning themselves to make the switch to new types of energy.
