The Security Risks of Climate Change

Leading up to the United Nations summit on climate change hopes were high that the meetings would produce a binding resolution for carbon emissions. Many hoped countries would emerge from the talks with a new world standard for carbon emissions.  But as the summit nears pessimism has emerged that the talks will be anything more than political and that new regulations are unlikely to be defined.  The climate tsar of the United Kingdom is one person who is doubtful that the talks will be fruitful.  In this case it may be the British military that does the most good, as it has recently revealed some of the security issues that may surround climate change.

Rear Admiral Neil Morisetti is trying to convince the world that there are serious security issues related to climate change.  Morisetti is the British military’s climate and energy envoy, and claims that climate change is not just an environmental issue but also carries a bevy of security risks as well.  It is Morisetti’s claim that the floods, cyclones, and droughts caused by climate change will bring civil unrest that will lead to a variety of security issues.  It is Morisetti’s job to convince the governments of the world that these threats are real and need to be addressed.

Rear Admiral Morisetti is responding to a recent study which showed the effects of a mere four degree rise in temperature.  The study made a map which showed the effects of rising sea levels, droughts, and agricultural failure, each of which will carry its own unique security risks.
