The issues of recycling, waste management, climate change, and global warming have become increasingly political over the last decade. Although most people agree that these things are problems, the method of dealing with them varies wildly depending on one’s political stance. In the United Kingdom the Labour Party has long been the champion of the environment, while the Conservatives hope to take a wait and see approach and do not believe in forcing green technology upon citizens. Most people however agree that whichever party is in power, green taxes are something that are not going to go away. This makes recycling and waste management an issue that each person must address personally.
The United Kingdom has come under fire over recent months for its failure to meet many of the recycling and waste management guidelines set out b the European Union. The United Kingdom currently sends over half of its rubbish to landfills which ranks near the bottom of the list of countries in Europe. With the United Kingdom looking to reduce the size of its landfills drastically over the next decade, fines and taxes for failing to recycle are on the rise. In addition, it is increasingly expensive for businesses and individuals to dump rubbish into landfills.
Because of this the government of the UK is asking its citizens to take personal responsibility for their recycling and to ask themselves the question of whether or not they are doing enough. According to spokesmen from the government minor changes in each household would make a dramatic impact on the size of UK landfills, many of which are near capacity.
