Brits Still not Buying Climate Change

Despite the fact that scientists around the world agree that climate change is a major problem that requires immediate action there are still many who aren’t buying the hype.  One of the problems is that exaggerated claims are often made by people with an agenda about climate change.  These easily refuted claims often lead to people becoming skeptical about the issue as a whole and discounting real evidence.  The United Kingdom Government sprung into action after a recent poll showed that most of its citizens are still skeptical about climate change.  The Government has launched an advertising campaign which aims to boost awareness about the dangers of climate change.

Not only does the campaign hope to raise awareness, but it also hopes to raise guilt levels among citizens who are not yet sure that they believe in climate change.  The first spot in the campaign features a father reading a book to his young daughter.  He is reading a litany of effects of climate change as well as the human behavior behind him.  At the end of the commercial the girl asks her father if the story has a happy ending and he simply replies that it is up to us to create the ending.

The ad was started after an opinion poll showed that over half of the people in the United Kingdom thought that climate change would not affect their lives and that nearly twenty percent thought that their children would not be affected by climate change.  Spokesmen for the Department of Energy and Climate Change said they hoped that the emotional ads would increase awareness of the gravity of the issue.
