The United Kingdom is now in the midst of the fall season in which many people have outdoor parties. These parties often times revolve around bonfires, which are both dangerous and illegal in the United Kingdom. Even though most people know that bonfires are potentially dangerous and against the law, thousands of bonfires are still expected to be lit for the annual Guy Fawkes festival. Even though they are urging people not to build illegal bonfires, a leading waste and recycling company has agreed to recycle the waste. In addition they have launched a campaign to educate citizens about the dangers of bonfires as well as what to do with the waste if they do decide to build a fire.
SITA UK is supporting a campaign which hopes to increase public safety and possibly save lives in the days leading to Bonfire Night. This will be the fourth year in a row that the company will allow residents to recycle bonfire material, even though the fires are built illegally. The company is working hand in hand with the Tyne and Wear Fire Service and Rescue, as well as with police and local councils to warn and educate people about the dangers of unauthorized fires. They also warned that illegal fires would be spotted and put out.
The waste from the dismantled fires will then be taken to one of SITA UK’s transfer sites where it will be sorted among the green material. The campaign warned that illegal fires post a very big risk to nearby homes, cars, and businesses and that they should be avoided.
