Most people in the United Kingdom have gotten used to the comforts of cheap food. Britons and people in other first world countries are currently enjoying an era where food is plentiful and cheap, but this may not always be the case according to a recent study.
Many would be stunned to know that the findings indicate that Brits may one day spend nearly twenty pounds for a pint of beer, or seven pounds for a loaf of bread. According to one environmental group, the affects of climate change could force a steep spike in the price of food that would leave millions hungry.
A study for Friends of the Earth warns that the affects of climate change are not in some far off future but could be evident in a matter of decades. The study aimed to gauge the affects that warming temperatures would have on the price of food items like pasta, bread, and rice. Extra pressure will be put on land due to droughts, crops will produce lower yields as temperatures continue to rise according to the study. This could drive the price of stable food items so high that many in the United Kingdom would not be able to afford food by the year 2030.
The study found that just a 4C change in temperature would be enough to significantly affect yields of rice and maze around the world, causing prices to soar well above inflation. Friends of the Earth released the study leading up to the climate change talks in Copenhagen in which they hope the world will take strong stance against climate change.
