Residents of the United Kingdom, especially those living in London, are feeling the pinch of rising costs for the Tube, buses, and congestion fees. Some of those commuting in London are paying upwards of ten pounds a day just for congestion fees. This has led to businesses and individuals looking for new and innovative ways to get to work, as well as reduce the amount of carbon emissions they are releasing into the environment. Traditional and electric scooters have become more popular over the last few years. As the cost of driving a car continues to rise with the increase of congestion fees and gasoline, more people are turning to old fashioned methods to get to work.
Some businesses are even taking part in a scheme that will encourage their employees to ride a bike to work. Over seventy major businesses have already pledged their support for the scheme in which their employees commute to work by bicycle. Participating companies have vowed to provide safe storage facilities for their employee’s bikes as well as offer them a place to change out of their sweaty clothing. The government has also offered tax breaks for companies which will offset the additional costs of bike and changing facilities.
The scheme has several benefits for the company, the employee, as well as the environment. Cycling to work will give employees daily exercise as well as save money on car costs. Companies can get a tax break, and the environment gets a break from the carbon emissions that would have normally been created.
