Aussies not Recycling Mobile Phones

If you asked the average Australian if they were green-minded nearly all of them would say yes.  Aussies have long prided themselves at being at the forefront of recycling and waste management.  However, according to a recent report by Sony Ericsson, this may not be the case.  A recent study released by Sony Ericsson revealed that over seventy percent of Australians have never properly disposed of or recycled their used mobile phones.  This is despite the fact that nearly the same amount of those surveyed said that they consider themselves to be eco-friendly.

The study also revealed a variety of reasons that Australians fail to recycle their old mobile phones.  Many said that they keep the phone as a backup that they might use in the future.  Over a third of those surveyed said that they were unsure how to recycle a mobile phone or where they should take it.  One in three also admitted that their mobile phone charger stays plugged in even when they aren’t charging the phone.  Mobile phone recycling has become a hot topic over the last few months as many around the world are just becoming aware of the potential problems that mobile phones can cause if they end up in landfills.

Millions of phones and other electronic devices end up finding their way into landfills, largely due to the fact that people simply don’t know how to recycle them.  A recycling initiative called MobileMuster has been launched in Australia to try and increase the rate at which people recycle their old phones.  Thus far, the initiative has collected more than one hundred tonnes of used phones.
