Citizens around the United Kingdom may be surprised to find that their gas and electric bills are going to be taxed increasingly every year over the next ten years. The plan, which was the brainchild of the Green Fiscal Commission, calls for increases in electric and gas taxes to be consistent over a ten year period. The plan comes as an effort to cut back the amount of energy being used in each household as well as a way to fund the massive changes in infrastructure that will need to occur as Britain moves to new types of energy.
If the plan goes through residents would see taxes represent eighty percent of their gas bill by the year 2020 and thirty percent of their electricity bill. This means that many Brits would be paying nearly eight hundred pounds a year, which represent more than sixty percent of the average annual dual fuel bill. Some are saying that gas and electric prices are too high and that customers are already largely funding the massive changes in infrastructure that will be needed for Britain’s future. Some believe that another tax on top of the bill might be too much for British citizens to handle.
The report by the Green Fiscal Commission did not just recommend hikes in taxes, but also offered additional ways that the government can help residents save money on electricity. The GFC suggested that homes that are being redecorated or added onto should be forced to install insulation and other energy saving devices.
