Brookes University is known for its dedication to the environment and recently it’s been collecting awards which prove it. After being named the United Kingdom’s third greenest university by People and Planet Green League earlier in the year, Brookes University has collected another prestigious award which honors its commitment to sustainable lifestyles. The University was honored to be the first in the United Kingdom to win a Gold EcoCampus Award. The accolade looks to award those Universities who dedicate their campus and curriculum to innovation in the field of sustainability and eco-management.
The Wheatley campus was the recipient of the award after putting in an environmental management system. The campus, which houses four thousand three hundred students, was recognized for its approach to sustainability. In order to receive the award a university must demonstrate the ways in which it is reducing its environmental impact using a variety of innovative methods. Energy use, types of travel, and waste production are all areas by which a campus is judged. In addition the campus must illustrate that it has understanding of areas where it could potentially be more eco-friendly. The Wheatley campus has long been at the forefront of sustainability.
Groups on campus launched several initiatives to increase the rate of recycling and reduce the amount of waste that the campus was sending to landfills. Rubbish bins were replaced with recycling bins, the school put on a recycling week and a trash compactor was replaced by a machine which machine which compacts recycled material. There is one higher award, the Platinum medal, which the campus hopes to win in the future.
