A system which uses underground pipes to transport waste may sound like something out of the pages of a science fiction novel, but the United Kingdom is preparing to make this a reality. A recent announcement revealed the United Kingdom’s plan to install a mobile vacuum waste system. The system, which was created by Envac, uses a series of vacuums to move waste through subterranean pipes. Sweden, Spain, and Norway already use similar systems and they have been a big success. Not only can the system keep unwanted rubbish out of the streets, it also removes the need for traditional pick up by trucks.
The technology uses standard waste trucks to transport the vacuum equipment. The vehicles then suck up the waste which has been placed in pipes on the outskirts of the area. This means that all of the rubbish can be picked up from a centralized location, thus removing the need for traditional collection rounds in residential areas. This means residents will no longer have to wake up to the sounds of noisy rubbish trucks, who pollute the environment with noise, unwanted smells, and carbon emissions. Envac also claims that the system will save on labor and fuel costs by separating each type of waste into its own inlet.
According to a spokesman for Envac there has already been a high amount of interest in their mobile system, which they say is far more efficient and affordable than traditional methods. The collection vehicle can be operated by one person and Envac says that collection times are often cut in half by using the mobile system.
