A recent study by Greenpeace aimed to discover which mobile phone companies were doing the most to help the environment. Mobile phone users are becoming increasingly concerned about mobile phone recycling and are curious which companies are the greenest. The study used a variety of criteria to rank all of the major mobile phone manufacturers. Some of the ways in which they were measure were by how well they followed through with green initiatives, take back programs for used mobile phones, and how well they inform their users about how to get rid of unwanted handsets.
In the Greenpeace study, Nokia ranked as the greenest mobile phone manufacturer largely due to its strong take back program as well as the ease in which consumers can find out information about how to recycle their phone. Nokia was one of the first manufacturers of mobile phones to offer bins at all of their locations as well as online. Samsung came in second position with a strong overall performance in all categories, while Sony Ericsson came in third due to the strength of its toxic chemical management but lost points for waste and recycling issues.
More and more companies are now releasing green handsets which minimize the impact the phones have on the environment. The biggest problem with mobile phones that end up in landfills is that the batteries can leak harmful chemicals into the soil and cause a variety of health and environmental problems. Several companies are trying to lessen this impact by introducing solar powered phones that do not operate on traditional batteries.
