Residents in Cambridge will soon find it easier and cleaner to recycle their glass, plastic, metal, and paper products. The Cambridge Council has announced that it will wheel out thousands of new bins for residents which will replace the old recycling boxes, which residents said had a number of problems which contributed to them recycling less.
Residents in Cambridge complained that the old boxes were far too small, create litter when the wind is strong, are hard to manipulate, and simply discourage residents from recycling more
Studies have shown that people will recycle more when the act is easy and when there are clear instructions for how to do so. The Cambridge Council heard this advice, which prompted them to launch new blue recycling bins with wheels for all of their residents. Now residents of Cambridge will be able to recycle all of their glass, paper, plastic, cans, and cardboard all in the same bin. Residents will no longer be forced to sort their recyclables into separate bins, which should make it easier for them to recycle more frequently. The rubbish will be shipped to Peterborough, where it will be sorted at a recycling facility.
As a means of promoting the new bins, the Cambridge Council has placed a secret prize in one of the bins. The household which finds the golden ticket hidden in one of the new recycling bins will win bikes for their entire family. Customers who do not have enough space to house the new blue bin will be allowed to keep the old recycling boxes.
