Brits Throwing away Phones and Money

A recent study showed that an alarming number of Britons do not recycle their old mobile phones and that many of these phones end up finding their way into landfills.  The study not only revealed the numbers but also tried to find the reasons why so many in the United Kingdom are unwilling or unable to recycle their used mobile phones.

The report, which was issued by moneysupermarket.com, found that over sixty percent of Britons do not recycle their mobile phones.  The study also gave some interesting explanations as to why the United Kingdom has fallen behind in the recycling of used mobile phones.

The research showed that the average Brit has at least two phones sitting around their house which they no longer use.  The study also showed that seven percent of these phones will end up in landfills.  This may sound like a small number but seven percent actually amounts to over five million phones which will be dumped into United Kingdom landfills.  Not only can mobile phone batteries leak harmful chemicals into the soil, but the United Kingdom is already far behind its goals to reduce the size of landfills over the next five years.

The study also tried to estimate the value of what was being thrown away.  Mobile phone recycling websites and centers are now offering cash for used mobile phones.  The research estimates that the value of the phones thrown into landfills is over one hundred and fifty million pounds.  Not only can Brits do their part for the environment but can also make some extra money simply by recycling their used mobile phones.
