The British government said on Thursday that there was a serious lack of urgency worldwide about climate change and the effects it could have on the world. They underlined the importance of the upcoming talks in Copenhagen where the United Nations will tackle the issue of climate change. They said that climate change is an issue that could potentially affect hundreds of millions of people around the world and turn into a global emergency.
The United Nations summit will take place in less than fifty days and according to the British Foreign Secretary, people are not fully grasping the importance of the talks.
David Miliband went on to say that climate change could cause disasters that would reach all over the globe and heighten tensions in the Middle East. Miliband claimed that trouble in the Middle East would be heightened by a lack of water and food and that this could lead to additional wars and a massive increase in migration. He said that increased urgency would be needed for the United Nations’ talks to have the desired effect.
There have been talks leading up to the Copenhagen summit but thus far, they have not been productive as countries have argued about a variety of issues. Rich and developing nations have disagreed on the amount of emissions cut as well as the amount of aid developing nations will need to be able to reduce emissions. Miliband is one of many in the senior British government who are calling on countries to get past their disagreements and come to some conclusions.
