A recent boost of cash into London recycling shops hopes to have benefits for social programs as well as the environment. The London Waste and Recycling Board recently approved a one hundred thousand pound grant for three new furniture recycling shops. The shops aim to keep some of the used furniture in London out of the landfills, as well as provide jobs within the local community. The grant will go to a charity named Trinity, which aims to assist homeless citizens with finding work and a place to live.
Currently almost four hundred thousand tonnes of used furniture finds its ways into landfills in the United Kingdom each year. This staggering number contributes to one of the major problems in the United Kingdom right now, which is keeping rubbish out of landfills. The United Kingdom has come under fire recently for its failure to reach many of the recycling and waste management goals outlined by the European Union. The EU has given specific directives to its member countries which mandate that they reduce the size of their landfills by fifty percent over the next five years. Thus far industry insiders say that the UK is lagging behind, which is what makes programs like Trinity so important.
Trinity has been an important charity for a number of reasons. Not only does the charity divert more than one thousand tonnes of furniture from landfills, but it offers job training and employment for young homeless people in the United Kingdom.
When the new stores open Trinity will be keeping over two thousand tonnes of furniture out of landfills, which earned them a thank you and congratulations from London Mayor Boris Johnson.
