UK Needs More Effort to Reduce Carbon Emissions

According to the Committee on Climate Change, the United Kingdom needs a change in policy if they are going to achieve their own emissions reduction goals.  The Committee claims that the United Kingdom cannot continue to rely on the market to achieve its goals in regards to emissions standards and that government intervention is necessary.  The Committee focused on the policies and changes necessary in areas like energy, where it says the government should intervene to launch a home insulation plan.

If the United Kingdom is going to reach its targets for emissions additional steps will have to be taken according to the Committee on Climate Change.  Currently emissions are decreasing at .5 % per year while the UK will need a decrease of 2-3% to reach targets.   In addition to the home insulation plan, the Committee offered several areas in which the government of the United Kingdom can step up its efforts.

The Committee aimed to make suggestions that were both practical and affordable, including increased investment in electric cars and the infrastructure to support them, as well as clean coal technology.  The Committee also said that more efforts needed to be made in alternative energy sources like wind and solar and increased investments in nuclear reactors.

One suggestion called for a national campaign to get people involved with their own homes.  This would include private owners, as well as builders of new homes to insulate their homes to decrease the amount of energy they consume.  In addition the plan called for the replacement of all non-condensing boilers by the year 2022.
