A recent recycling campaign in Scotland was recognized with an international award for innovation in recycling. The scheme, which aimed to not only boost recycling, but to ensure people were recycling correctly, was chosen from a large group of international candidates. The scheme is called The Waste Aware Scotland campaign and hopes to get more people in the United Kingdom to recycling without throwing waste in the improper place.
The campaign uses a very simple and direct catch phrase “Everything here…. can go in here,” and uses pictures of items which are frequently purchased and shows exactly what types of rubbish can go into each bin. One of the biggest obstacles in recycling is the sorting of trash which has been improperly thrown away. Large amounts of time and money are spent by recycling centers, which have to re-sort items before they can be recycled. The campaign hopes to educate the public about what they should be throwing into the recycling bin, and what is simply rubbish.
The advertisements used products which would register with Scottish consumers. Things like cans of baked beans, copes of local newspapers and cans of Irn Bru gave the ads a specifically Scottish feel. The campaign hoped that by providing real world examples they would be able to give a clear picture of exactly how to handle waste. Using real items versus generic descriptions makes for less recycling contamination.
The Global ISWA Award, which is given out every year, hopes to recognize campaigns which offer innovative solutions in the fields of waste management and recycling.
