School Receives Compost for Gardening Project

What started as a way to use some spare land behind a school has turned into a major gardening project thanks a large donation from a local waste management company.    SITA UK, which is a recycling and waste management company in the United Kingdom, has donated ten tonnes of compost to Morecambe Community High School in support of the school’s wildlife garden.  The school hopes the project will teach the children valuable skills as well as reinforce the importance of recycling and composting.

The idea started as the brainchild of Nigel Greenwood, a technology technician at Morecambe High School and a lover of gardening.  He recruited Dr. Phil Jumeau, a colleague at the school, to help organize the activity, which started as a simple way to use some extra land behind the school.  What started as a small idea has quickly blossomed into a major project involving forty students from Morecambe High School,  located in Lancashire.

The project can now take off after SITA’s donation of ten tonnes of compost.  Students will use the donation to improve structure, nutrient levels, and drainage of the wildlife garden, and hope that the garden will be prepared for spring planting.  In addition to learning how to grow a variety of plants and vegetables, the students will use the garden to learn about ecology and sustainability.

Morecambe High School hopes that the gardening project will help them gain admittance into the Eco-school programme in the United Kingdom, which is an organization for schools that are involved in recycling and waste management projects.
