New Battery Recycling Schemes Approved in UK

The Environmental Agency has announced its approval of seven new battery compliance schemes in the United Kingdom.  Out of the eight applicants for approval, seven schemes were found to meet the needs of the United Kingdom under the battery recycling laws which will go into effect in the year 2010 in the UK.  The Environmental Agency hopes that the new schemes will help the United Kingdom meet the recycling and waste management goals outlined by the European Union for each of its member countries.

The seven schemes which were approved by the Environmental Agency were all ones which met the strict battery recycling guidelines which will be rolled out in 2010.  The seven schemes are expected to help distributors and manufacturers of batteries to meet the obligations that the UK will enforce starting next year.  The seven schemes which were approved were Valpak, Budget Pack, Battery Pack, REPIC ebatt, CCR rebat, ERP UK ltd, and DHL Battery Compliance.

Many of the approved schemes come from companies which are already heavily involved in the recycling industry.   Many are already running packaging and WEEE compliance services, while companies like Battery Pack are already involved in waste management.  The only of the approved schemes without a background in UK compliance is CCR rebat, a German owned company which has a good reputation around the EU.

Industry insiders say it is important that the UK act now to get a head start on battery recycling, otherwise they will never be able to meet the goals.  The EU recycling goals have turned into law in the UK, who hopes to recycle twenty five percent of end of life batteries by the year 2012.
