Longshot Land, Bracknell in the United Kingdom is the site of a new waste management which aims to significantly increase the amount of recycling and reuse by the three boroughs in the area. The centre was started by FCC, which is a construction, waste, and water company from Spain. This installation was backed by a collaboration of the three councils in the area which are Reading, Bracknell Forest, and Wokingham. The three councils established a group called the re3 Partnership to improve recycling and waste management in the area.
The re3 Partnership was formed in response to EU directives which called for stricter regulations of recycling and waste management. Many local authorities decided not to wait for action from UK governments but took it upon themselves to improve the quality of recycling and waste management in their own communities, rather than pay ever increasing landfill fees. The re3 Partnership set goals to improve the infrastructure of its programs, to increase composting and recycling, and to minimize landfill growth over the next quarter of a century.
The new facility will help the partnership achieve their goal to significantly reduce the amount of waste it is putting into landfills. The partnership estimates that the new facility will handle at least one hundred thousand tons of waste per year, and that this amount will mean that nearly forty percent of all waste created in the three boroughs will end up being recycled.
The centre will also include a facility for education where local schools and community groups will be able to come and receive information about how they can be greener.
