Pub Bottles to be Recycled by Premier Waste Management

A company in the United Kingdom has decided to take advantage of one of the biggest contributors to landfills in the UK.  Currently pubs and bars are forced to separate bottles by color so that they can be recycled.  This causes most of these bottles to not get recycled at all, as it becomes a labor intensive duty for a restaurant, pub, or bar.  This is all about to change, as one business in the United Kingdom is now offering to remove the bottles from pubs without separating them into different bins.

Premier Waste Management has announced that it will now collect bottles directly from pubs without them needing to be separated by color.  This may seem like a small act, but in reality nearly six hundred thousand tons of glass bottles are tossed by pubs, restaurants, clubs, and hotels each year and almost all of it ends up in a landfill.

Premier is counting on the fact that workers in pubs and restaurants are often too busy to separate bottles themselves, so the service should save businesses a lot of time and effort.  Premier will collect the bottles and then take them to a facility where they will be sorted by color, smashed, and then recycled.

This is good news for United Kingdom landfills, which are currently well over the limits imposed by the EU earlier this year.  The EU has outlined directives for each of its member countries to lower their landfills by half by the year 2013.  The UK is currently well behind this pace, so Premier Waste Management is hoping their scheme will lessen the burden on local landfills.
