Finalists Announced for UK Recycling Awards

Recycling website letsrecycle.com recently revealed its list of finalists for its top prize in recycling and waste management.  More than one hundred and sixty community groups, businesses, and individuals entered the contest, which is one of the most prestigious awards offered for recycling and waste management.  The Awards for Excellence Recycling and Waste Management, which is in its sixth year, looks to reward those individuals, companies, and community organizations that make significant contributions in the field.

The United Kingdom has come under fire in recent weeks for forecasts which predict the country will fall short of many of the European Union’s recycling and waste management directives.  The EU outlined specific goals for each of its member nations, and thus far the UK has failed to meet many of the benchmarks and many experts in the industry believe they will fail the 2013 directive to lessen landfills by fifty percent.

The Awards for Excellence and Recycling Waste Management hopes that its profile and prizes will help to promote additional recycling and waste management around the United Kingdom.  The organizers say that the sheer number of entries signifies that the United Kingdom is turning around its profile as a country which does not recycle enough.

This year’s awards focused specifically on sustainable waste operations within communities as well as energy efficiency, which are both hot issues within the industry.  The organizers of the event say that they hope the event continues to grow at the same rate and that more people get involved with local authorities to demand more efficient waste management and recycling in their communities.
