In two weeks time the final round of the British Car Championship will decide the overall championship at Brands Hatch after an exciting weekend at Rockingham narrowed the field down to a dogfight between two competitors. Colin Turkington and Fabrizio Giovanardi will battle for the top spot after a weekend at Rockingham that lived up to its ecxiting reputation. Turkington is the favorite for the championship after giving himself a little buffer in Rockingham.
The final race of the afternoon provided the most excitement. Jelley was clearly in the lead in the race, but most of the crowd focused on the three drivers who still remained in contention for the overall championship. Jason Plato, who drives for Chevrolet, Colin Turkington, supported by BMW, and Fabrizio Giovanardi, who drives Vauxhall, were all in the hunt late.
Plato was knocked off of his spot and out of the race entirely, after a bump with fellow Chevrolet driver James Nash which after Plato collided with Tarzan on lap number thirteen. Giovanardi, also in contention for the top spot, was also knocked out of the top ten after colliding with Johnny Herbert and breaking the steering on his car.
All of these crashes were good news for Colin Turkington, whose fourth place finish left him ahead of the three men closest on his heels. Turkington was able to capitalize on his opponent’s misfortunes and extend his lead to thirteen points heading into the final three races of the season. Turkington’s fourth place finish means that he will take home the Independents Trophy for non-factory supported crews.
