Another airport in the United Kingdom has the earned the distinction of receiving the world’s first carbon award. Birmingham Airport has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard in recognition of its dedicated environmentally friendly policies. Manchester Airport was the first UK airport to win the accolade earlier this year.
The Carbon Trust Standard is reportedly the world’s first accolade to recognise organisations that make substantial reductions in their year-on year carbon footprint. Birmingham Airport has won the award for having cut its carbon emissions by four percent over the last three years.
The airport has managed to make significant reductions in its carbon-based emissions by introducing new technologies as well as making changes in operational procedures. The airport has also focussed on programmes to increase awareness among its staff. The carbon reduction has been achieved despite an expansion of airport facilities and the increase in passenger numbers over the last three years.
Chief executive of Birmingham Airport, Paul Kehoe, has said that the airport was delighted with the recognition, and believes that the award will motivate the facility to work even harder at further reducing its carbon footprint. He added that the award showed that the airport was moving in the right direction.
Operational since 1939, the airport celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. The facility offers links to several destinations, including international flights to New York, Rome and Dubai.
