Illegal Tyre Recycling Scams Plague UK

One of the newest scams in the United Kingdom involves conmen offering businesses solutions for their used tyre problems.  According to a report by BBC Wales, new recycling laws are partially responsible for the rise in businesses being preyed upon by conmen who are operating illegal tyre dumping schemes.  Many around the United Kingdom have reported that they were fooled into storing used tyres that they later become responsible for disposing of.

One such scam offered garages a service which would remove used tyres for a fee.   The tyres were then left in storage and the businesses were responsible for paying for their disposal and clean up.  Recently the European Union mandated that tyres no longer be dumped into landfills, which is partially responsible for giving birth to the scam.   Victims of the scam are pointing the finger at the Environment Agency for their lack of assistance in thwarting the scams.

Because of the new European Union directive which disallows the dumping of tyres into landfills, businesses, especially garages now must ensure that tyres are recycled.  This has become a large burden for some businesses as they are left with few alternatives for disposing of the used tyres on their property.

The United Kingdom has been criticized for failing to meet some of the recycling standards outlined by the European Union over the last two years.  It is estimated that over a million and a half pounds are spent annually by local authorities in an effort to dispose of illegally dumped tyres.
