Contest Hopes to Encourage Carton Squashing

The waste management council of Shropshire is asking their residents to enter a national competition to find the most creative way to squash cartons before they are recycled.  The competition aims at boosting recycling rates across the United Kingdom especially that of food and drink cartons made of recyclable materials.  Local residents are being asked to produce a video which shows the way in which they squash their recyclable drink and food cartons.

Tetra Pak, a carton manufacturer in the United Kingdom, is sponsoring the contest which is called How Do You Squash Yours.  They hope to challenge residents to make videos which show the safest and most innovative ways that customers have for squashing their cartons before they are sent for recycling.  Tetra Pak hopes that by adding an element of competition and fun the competition will promote recycling without residents having to hear the same tired arguments.

Thus far citizens around the United Kingdom have sent videos with various innovative methods for squashing cartons, everything from sitting on them, mashing them with a space hopper, or even allowing the local Rugby club to flatten the cartons in a fierce scrum.  Entrants can upload their videos to the website howdoyousquashyours.co.uk and the winning entrant will be voted on later in the year.

Even though the competition is meant to be fun, it illustrates the importance of flattening cartons before sending them for recycling.  According to studies carried out by the Alliance for Beverage Cartons and the Environment, as much as three times as many cartons could fit into recycling banks if residents simply squashed them first.
