Ireland’s Minister for the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government, John Gormley, stated that he had signed off on the European Union’s Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2007 while appearing at the start of Repak’s Green Christmas recycling campaign.
The regulations require that producers manage the process of returns of packaging and create targets for recovering and recycling packaging waste. Producers are also allowed to join programmes in place that support packaging waste recovery and recycling.
Gormley commented that in Ireland recycling rates for packaging had greatly increased over the past decade. Although Gormley expressed concern over the ever higher rates of packaging use, he stated that the new EU regulations which he supports present an avenue to address the problem. He also stressed that recycling the packaging waste would address some of the litter problem especially from cans and bottles.
