Car hire comparison website urges early bank holiday booking

CarRentals.co.uk, a leading car hire comparison site, is warning travellers that they could face rental car shortages or higher rates over the upcoming bank holiday. They are noting shortages in some popular destinations already in August – such as Alicante and Malaga.

As the economic downturn led to a recession, many rental car companies cut back on their fleet, expecting a decline in demand over the summer, but travellers that have decided to go on holiday are find that the shortage of vehicles means higher rental rates in some cases  - and no available cars in others.

Gareth Robinson, the CarRentals.co.uk managing director, said: “Lack of car hire availability is proving to be a big problem for many travellers this summer.  The car hire companies have scaled back in light of the credit crunch, but visitor numbers during peak periods have held up.  It’s customers who are being let down, with some paying hundreds of pounds more for their car than they did a year ago.”

On their website, consumers can find bank holiday rental car rates from £15 a day in Orlando, from £18 a day in Crete, from £23 a day in Malaga and from £17 a day in Newquay. These rates are based renting for one week, beginning 29 August, and are subject to change.

Robinson went on to say: “The popular Bank Holiday locations such as key resorts in Spain are already busy, so travellers may well find that any cars they can book are charged at a premium.”
