A wind turbine firm that recently experienced an 18-day occupation by workers has closed two of its UK factories, resulting in the loss of 425 jobs.
Vestas discontinued blade production activity at its Isle of Wight and Southampton facilities.
The worker occupation of the plant on the Isle of Wight, protesting the planned facility closures, ended last week with workers leaving the premises.
Vestas Wind Systems, the Denmark-based owner of the factory, obtained a court order against six workers that had set up a barricade at the plant and occupied it for longer than two weeks, looking to delay the closing of the facility.
Climate Rush campaign members chained themselves to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson’s property in London’s Regent’s Park, in what they said was an “act of solidarity” with the wind turbine workers.
It was originally thought that 625 jobs would be lost as a result of the closures, but Vestas revealed that the number of redundancies was 425.
According to Vestas, it was able to mitigate job losses by helping 40 employees find new jobs at the Isle of Wight research and development operation. Fifty-seven others will continue to work at the factory to assist in the closure, for an unspecified period.
