South Oxfordshire householders recycling 70 percent of waste

According to recent figures, householders in South Oxfordshire are set to become the best of Britain’s recyclers.

Since a new waste scheme was introduced six weeks ago, the South Oxfordshire District Council has achieved a recycling rate of 70 per cent for household waste, which is better than any other Oxfordshire district and ranks among the nation’s best.

Waste and recyclable materials are collected in an alternate weekly scheme that combines the use of two types of wheelie bins and the first collection of food waste in the UK.

The 57,000 households in the district are now recycling more than they ever have, from their doorsteps. Materials include glass, metal, paper and plastic.

A spokesman for the South Oxfordshire District Council said: “We cannot confirm we are officially the best council because the league tables for recycling currently use figures from 2007/08, which show the top recycling rate as 58.4 per cent. The 08/09 figures are not yet available.”

He added: “Our recycling rate for the first five weeks of the new service was 71 per cent, so we believe we may well come out on top.”

Figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) show that in 2007/2008, Oxfordshire District Council recycled 39 per cent of its household waste.
