Local councils say supermarkets should disclose packaging

Local councils are saying that supermarkets in the UK should be required to reveal the amount of packaging they produce.

According to the Local Government Association (LGA), at this time only Morrisons, Waitrose, and Marks & Spencer have responded to its request for detailed information regarding packaging.

The LGA indicated that the remaining five it asked for details, which includes Tesco and Sainsbury’s, referred the association to WRAP, the government-funded waste reduction body.

WRAP replied that it publishes data only for the overall grocery sector and not for individual retailers.

The LGA noted that supermarkets provide WRAP with information regarding the amount of packaging they produce, and is urging that the information be made available to the public on a quarterly basis.

In a letter sent to Hilary Benn, the environment secretary, Margaret Eaton, the LGA chairman, said: “Supermarkets must be open with people about how much packaging they are producing.”

She added: “It is vital that consumers can make informed choices about where they shop and which products they buy.

The LGA added that recycling efforts are undermined by the excess use of packaging by supermarkets, and that the packaging will add to the £1.8 billion spent by local authorities on landfill taxes from 2008 to 2011.
